Viola Helen Noel

Viola Helen Noel, 90, of 150 Ashland St., former longtime resident of 82 Bracewell Ave. died Wednesday at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in Athol on June 27, 1915, daughter of John and Adelina Scovine Luscia, she moved to North Adams as a child and attended local schools. She graduated from the former Bliss Business College in 1930. Mrs. Noel was first employed as a secretary at the former Berkshire Mercantile in North Adams. Later, she accepted a position as personal secretary to Isadore Shapiro at A. Shapiro & Sons. She began working at Sprague Electric Co. in 1947, where she remained until the firm closed in 1975. At that time, she became a sales clerk at the former Peggy Parker's on Eagle Street, retiring in the 1980s. An accomplished dancer in her youth, she spent much of her free time on the dance floor at the former Meadowbrook Ballroom and Johnny's Dance Palace in North Adams. She was a golfer and a longtime member of Stamford Valley Golf Course, where she played well into her 80s. During her later years, she was a member of the North Adams Historical Society. She and her husband, Edward John Noel Sr., were married Oct. 12, 1940, in St. Anthony of Padua Church. He predeceased her on Nov. 8, 1993. She leaves a daughter, Carol A. Mahar of Pittsfield; two sons, Edward J. Noel Jr., of North Adams and Jeffrey M. Noel of Pittsfield; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Calling hours for Viola Noel, who died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, will take place Saturday, May 20,from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in care of the funeral home, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA. Survivors include daughters-in-law, Judith and Lynn; four grandchildren, Kimberly Noel Christiansen of Charlotte, N.C., Kirby J. Noel of Nashville, Tenn., Blair R. Mahar of Savoy, and Scott P. Mahar of Northampton; and six great-grandchildren, McKee Christiansen, Shaylor Christiansen, Liam Christiansen, Christian Brown, Jack Noel, and Maya Mahar, and several nephews. One sister and five brothers predeceased her.
