Robert C. Winterbottom Sr.

Robert C. Winterbottom Sr., 86, of 1976 Clayton-Mill River Road, Clayton, died Wednesday at Timberlyn Heights Health Center in Great Barrington. Born in Lime Rock, Conn., on Feb. 4, 1920, son of Alonso and Sadie Cashdollar Winterbottom, he attended Salisbury Central School. He enlisted in the Army on Jan. 19, 1942, and served with Headquarters Battery, 140th Field Artillery Battalion, as a technician fifth grade in the Northern Solomon Islands and at Luzon. He was awarded the Purple Heart and was discharged on Oct. 14, 1945. Mr. Winterbottom was employed by Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn., as a groundskeeper He also worked as a plumber, carpenter and electrician. He was a member of the Lakeville Veterans of Foreign Wars and of Umpachene Grange. He and his wife, the former Flora "Dolly" Gagg, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary April 7. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Patricia Ann Winterbottom Godburn of Milton, Vt.; a son, Robert C. Winterbottom Jr.; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Robert C. Winterbottom Sr., who died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, will be held Saturday, June 3, at 11 at the Church of God in Clayton. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be sent to the New Marlborough First Responders, P.O. Box 260, Southfield, MA 01259. Arrangements are under the care of NEWKIRK-PALMER FUNERAL HOME, 118 Main St., Canaan, CT 06018. Mr. Winterbottom was a jack of all trades. If something broke, he could fix it. He also leaves eight nieces. He was predeceased by his sister, Emma W. Belter.
