Josephine M. Gage

Josephine M. Gage, 92, of 5 Baldwin Hill Road, the oldest native resident of Egremont, died Tuesday at Fairview Commons Nursing Home. Born in Egremont on Dec. 23, 1913, daughter of John and Johanna Guletti Morandi, she attended local schools and was a 1931 graduate of the former Searles High School. At the age of 70, she attended Berkshire Community College. She was employed by Major Hugh Smiley of South Egremont as a secretary. In the 1930s, she managed the Otis Hotel and Restaurant in Otis. She also managed the dining rooms at the Tekoa Country Club in Westfield, Monarch Development Corp. and the Jug End Barn in Egremont. She was an artist, winning several prizes at the Westenhook Gallery in Sheffield. She taught oil painting at the Claire Teague Senior Center and was instrumental in creating the Sheffield Art League. She also volunteered for the Visiting Nurse Association and the former Thrift Shop in Great Barrington. She was a member of the Egremont Country Club. She and her husband, Niles H. Gage, were married on May 5, 1938, at the Sheffield Congregational Church. He predeceased her on Jan. 20, 2003. She leaves three daughters, Carol Gage of Copake Falls, N.Y., Jane Gage of Pomerene, Ariz., and Susan Gage Russell of Oakland, Calif.; two sons, Thomas A. Gage of Egremont and William N. Gage of Great Barrington; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Josephine M. Gage, who died Tuesday, May 30, 2006, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 2, from the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Shaun O'Connor, M.I.C., officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Egremont. Family will receive friends at a calling hour from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., preceding the funeral on Friday. Expressions of sympathy in Josephine's memory may be made to the Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Service in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230-1815. She also leaves a niece, Roberta Morandi Garfield. She was predeceased by a sister, Marguerite Kreh; a brother, Ambrose Morandi, and a grandson, H. William Flint, who died May 3, 2002.
