Lewis A. Rote Jr.

Lewis A. Rote Jr., 73, or 15 Home Road died Thursday at his home. Born in Sheffield on Aug. 5, 1932, son of Lewis A. Rote Sr. and Elizabeth Segalla Rote, he attended local schools and was a 1950 graduate of the former Sheffield High School. Mr. Rote was employed by Warren and Macchi Builders as a carpenter, retiring in 1995. Previously, he had worked with his son, Bryan, for Rote Builders. He had also worked as a handyman for numerous Sheffield residences. He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Church. He was a member of the Sheffield Fire Department for more than 30 years. He enjoyed racing stock cars and boats. In his younger years, he was a deer hunter. He and his wife, the former Rose Zamperini, were married Oct. 25, 1952, in Our Lady of the Valley Church. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, J. Scott and Bryan Rote, both of Sheffield; two sisters, Norma Novicki of Ashley Falls, and Betsy Smith of Sheffield, and seven grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Lewis A. Rote Jr., who died Thursday, July 6, 2006, will be held Tuesday, July 11, at 11 a.m. from BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. John Lis, pastor of Our Lady of the Valley Church officiating. Burial will follow in Sheffield Center Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Monday, July 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy in Lewis's memory may be made to the Sheffield Fire Department in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230-1815. Mr. Rote enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and spending time with his family. He leaves seven grandchildren, Sheena, Ashley, Matthew, Allison, Jordan, Morgan and Mitchell Rote. He was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Handlowick.
