Emilio Anthony "Slim" Ariazi

Emilio Anthony "Slim" Ariazi, 86, of 352 Houghton St. died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center, where he was admitted two weeks ago. Born in North Adams on June 6, 1920, son of the late Joseph Ariazi and Vittoria Alimandi Ariazi, he was educated in North Adams schools. Mr. Ariazi was employed with the former Gale Shoe Co. on Brown Street until the outbreak of World War II. He entered the Army in September 1942 and served in Europe with the 456th Quartermaster Company of the 102nd Evacuation Hospital. He took part in the Battle of the Bulge, and fought in Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Victory Medal and the European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon for his service. He was honorably discharged in December 1945. He returned to North Adams and was employed for more than 35 years with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Traffic Division, retiring in 1982 as a supervisor. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Anthony's Church, and enjoyed traveling. His wife, the former Alda R. Sondrini, whom he married on March 3, 1946, in St. Thomas' Church in Adams, died Aug. 25, 1998. He leaves a sister, Theresa Valenti of Pittsfield, who also was his caregiver for eight years. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Emilio Ariazi, who died Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, will be celebrated Friday morning, Sept. 1, 2006, at 11 at St. Anthony's Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS CENTRAL CHAPELS are Friday from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, any donations in his memory are suggested for St. Jude Children's Hospital or Hospice of Central Berkshire through the funeral home, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247. He leaves several nieces and nephews, including his godson, David Ariazi of Adams, Mark Ariazi of the state of Florida, and Paul Valenti of Pittsfield, and a good friend and neighbor, Daniel Goodell of North Adams. He was predeceased by two brothers, Dominick and John Ariazi.
