Robert Beals, 62, of 92-31 57th Ave., Elmhurst, N.Y., formerly of Pittsfield, died of cancer on Sunday at the Margaret Tietz Hospice in Jamaica, N.Y. Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 16, 1943, son of Julie M. Cote Beals and the late Robert E. Beals, he attended the former Notre Dame Grammar School in Pittsfield, and then for two years attended the former Cranwell Preparatory School in Lenox. He was a 1961 graduate of St. Joseph's Central High School. In 1965, he moved to Boston, and while attending the University of Massachusetts there, he worked as a driver for the Boston Cab Co.. He moved to Queens, N.Y., in 1971, and took classes at New York University night school to study computer programming. He was also fluent in Spanish. Most recently, Mr. Beals was employed by the Avrett, Free & Ginsberg advertising agency in New York, where he worked for 11 years. He retired in 2001. Previously, he worked for Altschiller Advertising in New York for five years. Prior to that, in 1982, he was employed by N.W. Ayer Advertising in Manhattan for two years, and then for the Ted Bates Advertising Agency, also in Manhattan, for two years. He was a communicant of St. John the Apostle Parish in Queens, N.Y. While in Pittsfield, he was a communicant of the former Notre Dame Church. Mr. Beals was a longtime member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singers of America and sang in several quartets. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball, and was a Yankees fan. He loved the theater, entertaining and photography. He was a movie buff and a reader who cherished his collection of first-edition books. Besides his mother, of Pittsfield, Mr. Beals leaves his longtime friend, Anthony Joseph Rozboril, of Elmhurst, with whom he made his home. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Robert "Bob" Beals, who died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, will be Friday, Sept. 1, at 8:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, celebrated by the Rev. Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Beals may be made to the Margaret Tietz Hospice in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Mr. Beals also leaves two uncles, Alfred J. Cote and George R. Cote, both of Pittsfield; and two aunts, Therese C. Cote of Pittsfield and Adele L. Ostrander of Alexandria, Va., as well as several cousins. His love of music and barbershop singing and arranging brought him many hours of enjoyment. One of his proudest achievements was in 1970, when he arranged and managed the barbershop music for his mother's championship quartet, the Pinker-Tones.

I remember Bob and sang with him in a Barbershop quartet back in 1967 and 1968. (C-minors) I had been in touch with his mom a few years ago when she was down sizing and preparing to move out of her home. I have not been able to contact her after her move Please let her know I think of her and Bobby particularly during this month of August. Warren Cunningham, Hudson, Ma.
