Herman L. "Nick" Nichols

Herman L. "Nick" Nichols, 87, of Algerie Road died Friday at home. Born in Bellows Falls, Vt., on April 20, 1919, son of Joseph and Flora Delil Nichols, he attended culinary school there. After graduating from the culinary school, he worked for Sheridan Hotels throughout the country as a head chef. A World War II Army veteran, he served from 1941 to 1945. He moved to East Otis in 1972 and worked at Deer's Inn in Becket and at the Cove Inn in Great Barrington. He was an active volunteer, spanning two decades, and because of his grassroots efforts, many local families enjoyed food on their tables. He and his wife, the former Rosie Stiner, were married April 28, 1965. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Sarah A. Stiner of Lee, Regina M. Nichols of Otis and Nancy A. Nichols of Westfield; a brother, Earl Nichols of Interlachen, Fla., and a grandson. He was predeceased by a son, Roderick Stiner. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Herman L. Nichols, who died Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, will be conducted Wednesday at 10 at KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee by the Rev. Charles F. Young, hospice chaplain. Burial will follow in Otis Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 7. He also leaves a grandson, Tyler.
