Jane E. VanZandt

Jane E. VanZandt, 86, of Hampden, died yesterday at home. Born in Lee on Oct. 7, 1919, daughter of Edward H. and Rose Kearin Armstrong, she was raised in Lenox and graduated from Stockbridge High School as class valedictorian. She resided in Springfield for 35 years and in Hampden for the past 10 years. Mrs. VanZandt was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, and a member of the Hampden Senior Center and the Scantic Valley Senior Citizens Club. She and her husband, Edward G. VanZandt, were married for 51 years. He died in 1997. Mrs. VanZandt leaves four sons, Thomas E. VanZandt of West Pawlet, Vt., Edward G. VanZandt Jr. of Ware, William B. VanZandt of Chicopee, and Robert J. VanZandt of Belchertown; two daughters, Elizabeth A. Purchas and Susan J. VanZandt-Driscoll, both of Hampden; a brother, George Armstrong of Lenox; a sister, Rosemary Buttrum of Phoenix; 13 grandchildren; and six great-granchildren. A daughter, Diane M. VanZandt, predeceased her. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Jane E. Armstrong VanZandt, who died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, will be held Monday, Sept. 25, at SAMPSON'S CHAPEL OF THE ACRES FUNERAL HOME, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Hampden. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in St. Ann's Cemetery, Housatonic St., Lenox. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Quaboag Valley Visitng Nurse and Hospice, 103 Fairview St., Palmer, MA 01069, and/or to the Friends of Hampden Senior Center, 104 Allen St., Hampden, MA 01036. She also leaves five daughters-in-law, Madeline VanZandt, Mary VanZandt, Maggie VanZandt, Elizabeth VanZandt and Christine Maiwald; two sons-in-law, Ronald and Michael; a sister-in-law, Claire; 13 grandchildren, Thomas, Robert, Edward III, Kelly, Kathy, Brett, Brianne, Scott, William LaShonda, Robert, Joseph and Kevin; and six great-grandchildren, Connor, Kaitlyn, Erika, Hunter, Samantha and Andrew. The highlight of Jane's life was the love of her family. Her husband, children, brothers and sisters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the many friends that she had. She will be sadly missed by all.
