Grace Hakes

Grace Hakes, 78, of 3 Myrtle St. died Saturday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Born in Wilmington, Vt., on Sept. 18, 1928, daughter of Henry P. and Isabella Cardinal Arigoni, she attended schools in Adams. In her earlier years she worked for the former Clark Biscuit Co. and the former Mammoth Mart, both in North Adams. She enjoyed playing the piano, singing and cooking. An expert knitter, she made many rugs and afghans over the years. She and her husband, William H. Hakes, celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary June 27. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Stephen H. Hakes of Adams; a brother, Francis Arigoni of the state of Florida; and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, William F. Hakes. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral and burial for Grace Hakes, who died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of the donor's choice through AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, MA 01220, which is in charge of arrangements. She leaves five grandchildren, Olivia Hakes and Bridget Pelletier, both of North Adams, and Jesse and Bethani Hakes and Hannah LaPerle, all of Adams; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Henry and Matthew "Red" Arigoni, and by a sister, Elizabeth Roy. She will be remembered for her talent, love for life and family, and caring attitude.
