Werner Ernest Elsberg

Werner Ernest Elsberg, 90, of Swamp Road died Thursday at home. A regular columnist for The Berkshire Eagle, he wrote on economics and international relations. Born in Warendorf, Germany, on Feb. 19, 1916, son of David and Rika Windmuller Elsberg, he emigrated to the United States in 1938. He graduated from high school in Germany and attended Penn State University in Pennsylvania. Mr. Elsberg was an industrial engineer and worked for the United Nations International Development Organization. He was also a private consultant for companies in the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America. From 1970 to 1983, he was director of the Berkshire Training and Employment Program in Berkshire County. He served as a member of the Berkshire County Personnel Board. He and his wife, the former Dorothy Gordon, were married 66 years. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Erica Marin of Mexico City, Mexico, and Deborah Bogosian of Carmel, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Werner Elsberg, who died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to the Community Health Association of Richmond/West Stockbridge, both in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. He also leaves four grandchildren, Alexander and Clara Marin, and Jeremy and Daniel Bogosian; a great-granddaughter, Carolina Maria Marin-Robert; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marcella Gordon Walder and Leo Walder; his nephews, Nicholas and David Elsberg, and David Walder; and his nieces, Joan Bone and Betty Lee Hubbard, Melinda Schenk, and Judith and Amy Walder. Mr. Elsberg also leaves many beloved friends, including Eli Waldeck of Ottawa, Canada, and William Ballen of Pittsfield.
