Alexander J. Grande Jr.

Alexander J. Grande Jr., 82, of 75 Commercial St. died Wednesday at North Adams Regional Hospital after being stricken at home. Born in North Adams on Aug. 15, 1924, son of Alexander J. Grande Sr. and Ida Lebert Grande, he was a 1942 graduate of Drury High School and attended North Adams State College. An Army Air Force veteran of World War II, he served in the European theater as a B17 pilot of the Flying Fortresses. He also flew missions on the China-Burma-India route. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of captain and received the Purple Heart. Mr. Grande was employed by the former Arnold Print Works for 32 years as a chemist and supervisor, retiring in 1986. He also worked for 17 years with the handicapped in Northern Berkshire. He was a communicant of the parishes of Notre Dame-St. Thomas, a former member and past post commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a former member of Alert Hose Company. He was also a former member of the Adams School Committee and a former Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts' Troop 38. He and his wife, the former Rita Lefebvre, were married Oct. 11, 1973. Besides his wife, he leaves a a son, Brian Grande of Adams; a daughter, Melissa Grande of Adams; a stepson, Martin Lagowski of Adams; a stepdaughter, Donna Banning of Naples, Fla.; a brother, Robert Grande of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Priscilla LeSage of Petaluma, Calif.; and three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE --Services for Alexander J. Grande Jr., who died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, will be Tuesday at 11 from TROTTIER PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Summer St., Adams. The Rev. Julian LaFrame will officiate. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery at a date to be announced. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 8. He also leaves a stepson-in-law, Scott, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Walter Grande, and by two sisters, Evelyn Grande and Jean Grande.
