John E. Casey Jr.

John E. Casey Jr., 81, of Carrabelle, Fla., a native of Great Barrington, died Sunday at home. He was born on July 7, 1925, son of John E. Casey Sr. and Bridget "Della" O'Connell Casey, who owned and operated Jack's Restaurant from 1920 to 1956. He attended Riverside Military Academy in Atlanta. A veteran of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, he enlisted in the Navy in 1942 at the age of 17 and served on both a destroyer and a submarine, "Tin Can Soldier." He joined the Air Force Reserve in 1948 and re-entered active service at the beginning of the Korean War. His military career spanned 28 years. He served 23 years in the Air Force as a security policeman, retiring May 18, 1971. Mr. Casey was a charter member of James A. Modolo Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Great Barrington. After retirement, he graduated in 1974 with honors from Northwestern Connecticut Community College. He moved to Florida in 1978. He leaves his wife, Ann. He also leaves three daughters, Barbara Jessie of Gainesville, Fla., Frances Casey of Pittsfield and Mary Pat James of Madison, Ala.; two sons, retired Col. Michael T. Casey of Housatonic and Vo Nam J. Casey of Milford; a sister, Dorothy Casey of Great Barrington; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for John E. Casey Jr., who died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006, will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, is in charge of local arrangements. Mr. Casey also leaves many nephews and nieces as well as the many friends who have had the honor of knowing him along the journey. He can be remembered in lieu of flowers with donations to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101, or to the USS DeHaven Sailors' Association, 2531 North Kingsdale Road, Joplin, MO 64804-1341.
