John Merola

John Merola, 80, of 8 Mapleview Drive died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Rome, Italy, on Nov. 28, 1926, son of Adolfo and Antoinette Tucheron Merola, he moved with his family to New York City at age 7 and attended school in the Bronx. He moved to North Egremont in 1969. He served in the Navy during World War II. In 1952, he graduated from the New York Police Academy. He worked as a patrolman for the NYPD for 19 years, retiring in 1971. He was a member of VFW Modolo Post 8348 in Great Barrington, the NYPA, the First Precinct of New York City and the Greater Years of West Stockbridge. He leaves his wife, the former Florence Stack, whom he married April 2, 1952, on Staten Island, N.Y. He also leaves three sons, John Merola of Hudson, N.Y., Joseph Merola of Sheffield and Jeffrey Merola of Shirley; three daughters, Annette Ferron of Dalton, Iris Peppe of Pittsfield and Suzanne Wool of Great Barrington; a sister, Regina Merola of Staten Island; and 12 grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Leonardo Merola and Mario Merola. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for John Merola, 80, who died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, will be held Friday, Dec. 29 at 11 a.m. at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME with the Rev. William Murphy officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends on Thursday, Dec. 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in John's memory to the Multiple Sclerosis Society in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Mr. Merola leaves 12 grandchildren: Christopher, Thomas, Sarah and Daniel Peppe; Michelle, Joseph and Jeffrey Merola; Katie, Joseph and Steven Wool; and Armond and Veronica Ferron. He enjoyed painting windmill scenes and spending time with his family.
