The Rev. Donald Platt

The Rev. Donald Platt, 90, of 80 Taconic Ave. died Monday at the Great Barrington Rehab and Nursing Center. Born in Everett, Wash., on June 18, 1916, son of Thomas and Bessie Martin Platt, he graduated summa cum laude from Bard College of Columbia University. He attended Berkley Divinity School of Yale University and was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church. He served as curate of St. Stephens in, Providence, R.I., before enlisting in the Navy as a chaplain during World War II, where he earned the rank of lieutenant commander. He served at St. Augustine's in Santa Monica, Calif., and as vicar at St. Mary's in Crystal Lake, Ill. He spent four years working on his doctoral thesis in Cambridge, England. After returning to the United States, he was chaplain to Episcopal students at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla., and later joined the staff at Trinity Church in Manhattan, N.Y. He became rector of Christ Church, Sheffield, until he retired to Salisbury, Conn. He leaves his wife, Martha; two sons, Donald Platt of West Lafayette, Ind., and Michael Platt of Great Barrington; a brother, Frank Platt of Everett; and two granddaughters. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for the Rev. Donald Platt, who died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, will be held Saturday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. at Christ Church, Sheffield. Committal will follow in the Memorial Garden at Christ Church. There are no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy in the Rev. Platt's memory may be made to Christ Church, in care of BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOMES, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230-1815, which is in charge of arrangements.
