Paul F. Allyn

Paul F. Allyn, 81, of 291 East Canaan, Conn., died yesterday morning at Sharon (Conn.) Hospital. Born June 7, 1925 in Great Barrington, son of Louis E. and Margaret Goggin Allyn, he attended local schools and graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, Conn., in 1945. Mr. Allyn worked alongside his father and brothers at Louis E. Allyn and Son Well Drilling, working as general manager until 1970. He went on to assume leadership of Allyndale Limestone as one of the original founders and CEO of the plant in East Canaan. He served the town as selectman from 1975 to 1977; as first selectman from 1977 to 1981; on the Planning Commission from 1988 to 1991; and on the board of directors at Sharon Hospital. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in North Canaan, Conn. He was also a member of Elks Lodge 844 in Winsted, Conn. He was also an original member of Boy Scout Troop 22 in North Canaan. He enjoyed golf, playing cards and thoroughbred racing. He leaves his wife of 52 years, the former Leona Porter Allyn, whom he married May 1, 1954. He also leaves three sons, Steven Allyn, Brian Allyn and Leonard Allyn, all of East Canaan; six grandsons; two granddaughters; and three great-granddaughters. He was predeceased by two sons, Paul Frederick Allyn Jr. and David James Allyn. He was also predeceased by five brothers, Louis E. Allyn Jr., Rossling Allyn, Leslie Allyn, Walter Allyn and Ralph Allyn; and two sisters, Margaret Fracaro and Louise Michalek. FUNERAL NOTICE-- Funeral services for Paul F. Allyn, who died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006, will be held from NEWKIRK-PALMER FUNERAL HOME, 118 Main St., North Canaan, Conn., Saturday, Dec. 30 at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Main St. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be sent to Canaan Fire Company, Canaan, Conn. 06018 or to the North Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 178, Canaan, CT 06018. Mr. Allyn also leaves his daughters-in-law, Christine, Tracy and Kristin, all of East Canaan. While attending HVRHS, Mr. Allyn drove the school bus, bringing other students to school. During his tenure at Allyn and Son Well Drilling, he introduced the technique of rotary well drilling to New England. He brought in the first rotary drill machine, and while he met with early skepticism, it continues to be the method of choice in well drilling today. He was instrumental in securing the funding from the State of Connecticut for the CT-Scan program at Sharon Hospital. He was an avid golfer, holding memberships at Wyantenuck Country Club, Egremont and Quarry View Golf Club in East Canaan. He was a lover of thoroughbred racing and owned several thoroughbreds himself. He also enjoyed playing a hand of cards.
