Gertrude Mae Wittig Armstrong, 81, of 79 Natural Bridge Road died Monday at Sweetbrook Care Center in Williamstown. Born in Adams Nov. 28, 1925, daughter of the late Gustave Wittig and Norma Platner Wittig, she attended schools in Adams, including the former Adams High School. She worked for the former Gale Shoe Co. in North Adams before becoming a homemaker. Later, she worked for Pizzi's Dress Shop for 10 years. She was last employed by Sprague Electric Co. for 10 years before retiring in 1988. Mrs. Armstrong enjoyed cross-country skiing and hiking. She also enjoyed playing cards. She married James Foyer Armstrong on Nov. 8, 1948, in Adams. He died Dec. 4, 2000. She leaves a daughter, Barbara A. Seth of Grafton, Wis.; a son, John Foyer Armstrong of North Adams; a sister, Martha Ouellette of Stamford, Vt.; two brothers, John Wittig of Gillawog, N.Y., and Richard Wittig of Adams; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by six brothers, Otto, Robert, Anthony, Andrew, Gustave and George Wittig; and two sisters, Pauline Gallese and Margaret Clement. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Private graveside services for Gertrude Mae Wittig Armstrong, who died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, will be held at the convenience of the family at Hillside Cemetery in North Adams. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS CENTRAL CHAPELS, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She also leaves a son-in-law, Vijay of Grafton, Wis.; a granddaughter, Jennifer Seth-Cimini of East Aurora, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren, Ava Cimini and Alec Cimini; and nieces and nephews.
