James Cornelius Kapteyn

James Cornelius Kapteyn, 45, an English teacher and assistant dean of students at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, died Tuesday while playing soccer in Bernardston. Born in Weston on June 22, 1961, son of the late James A. and Janet Ostrander Kapteyn, he graduated from Berkshire Country Day School, Deerfield Academy and Trinity College in Hartford and received his master's from Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College. Mr. Kapteyn also was a coach of the Deerfield varsity girls' soccer and varsity boys' lacrosse teams. Previously, he was chairman of the English departments at Williston-Northampton School and at Cushing Academy. He enjoyed fly-fishing. He previously performed regularly in the role of Father in the annual Pioneer Valley Ballet production of "The Nutcracker." He and his wife, the former Kirsten Morgan Kimball, were married May 20, 1989, in Marblehead. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Ingrid Kapteyn and Ilse Kapteyn, both at home; and five sisters, Sarah Thorne, Phoebe Williams and Amy Butterworth, all of West Stockbridge, and Molly Boxer and Kate Baldwin, both of Richmond. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for James C. Kapteyn, who died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, will be held Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at 11 at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Deerfield Land Trust, Box 368, Deerfield, MA 01342; to Trout Unlimited, www.tu.org; or to the Kapteyn Educational Fund (for Ingrid and Ilse), c/o Reed Webster, Morgan Stanley, 70 West Madison St., Suite 300, Chicago, IL 60602. He was a beloved teacher and colleague. He also leaves 18 nieces and nephews.
