William G. Garner

William G. Garner, 71, of 345 Barbour St. died Friday at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in North Adams on Sept. 27, 1935, son of William H. and Mildred Therrien Garner, he graduated from Drury High School and received an associate degree in fire science from Berkshire Community College. He served three years with the Marine Corps during the Korean War and then enlisted with the Seabees in the Naval Reserve. Mr. Garner served as a firefighter in North Adams for 34 years. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1984 and to fire director in 1991, retiring in 1995. He had been a member of the Berkshire County Sheriff's Department since 1991. He and his wife, the former Shirley A. Deneault, would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary April 7. They were married at the former Holy Family Church in North Adams. Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Russell A. Garner of Issaquah, Wash., Scott A. Garner of Churubusco, Ind., Gerald W. Garner of Adams and Eric J. Garner of Williamstown; two sisters, Linda Lloyd and Donna Garner, both of North Adams; and seven grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- At the request of Mr. Garner, he will be cremated, and there will be no calling hours. A ceremony will be performed Wednesday at 11:30 at the family plot in South View Cemetery. Final arrangements will be made through FLYNN AND DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS in North Adams. The family would like to thank the members of the North Adams Fire Department for all of their support and assistance during this difficult time and to the staff at North Adams Regional Hospital for their kindness while caring for him. Mr. Garner was a loving husband and father. He will be missed and never forgotten by his family. He also leaves two brothers-in-law, Henry Denault and Robert Lloyd, and seven grandchildren, Ian, Alyssa, Molly, Zachary, Aubrey, Brittaney and Evan.
