Eric R. Lagerwall

Eric R. Lagerwall, 68, of Route 295, East Chatham, N.Y., died Tuesday at his residence. He was the father of Glenn E. Lagerwall of Lanesborough. Born July 10, 1938, in Nyack, N.Y., son of the late Harry and Adelaide Nelson Lagerwall, he graduated from New York City public schools and entered the Coast Guard, serving from 1956 to 1960. Mr. Lagerwall was employed by Energy Answers Corp. in Canaan, N.Y. as a collection specialist for eight years. Prior to that, he was employed by the Columbia County Highway Department as a machine operator for 27 years, retiring in 1999. Previously, he was employed by Clifford Nelson Contracting, Ben Franklin Press in Pittsfield and Ceramaseal in New Lebanon, N.Y. At one time, he was employed as a house painter. He served as Town of Canaan highway superintendent for three years, as well as animal control officer for 25 years; he also served as deputy clerk. He was a volunteer member of the Chatham Rescue Squad for 30 years, a 50-year member, past president and past chief of the East Chatham Volunteer Fire Company, and a member of the Canaan Republican Association and Canaan Conservation Club. Mr. Lagerwall attained the rank of Eagle Scout, having been Boy Scout Leader in the East Chatham-Canaan area for many years, and served on the district council. He and his wife, the former Martha Heltzle, were married for 46 years. They moved to East Chatham in 1962. Besides his wife and son, Mr. Lagerwall leaves another son, Robert H. Lagerwall of East Chatham; a daughter, Karen M. Keriazes of Rexford, N.Y.; and six grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Eric R. Lagerwall, who died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Canaan Congregational Church with the Rev. Janet McKinstry, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Canaan Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday evening from 4 to 8 at WENK FUNERAL HOME, Chatham, N.Y. He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Dunlavey, in 2003.
