Carleton Godfrey Bechard

Carleton Godfrey Bechard, 84, of 94 Emerald Lane, Williamstown, formerly of 21 Bob's Hill, Adams, died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted nine days ago. Born in Adams on Aug. 27, 1922, son of Godfrey and Selma Rupprecht Bechard, he graduated from the former North Summer Street Grammar School, from the former C.T. Plunkett Junior High School and, in 1940, from the former Adams High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he saw action with George Patton's 4th Cavalry Division in the European theater. He received several commendations, including the Purple Heart. Mr. Bechard was employed by General Electric Co. in the transformer division as a coil clamper, retiring after 42 years. He and his wife, the former Eleanor Ann Priori, were married in St. Thomas' Church. Beside his wife, he leaves two sons, Gary F. Bechard of North Adams and Dennis C. Bechard of Adams; a sister, Antoinette Mahar of Adams; three grandchildren; and five grandchildren. A daughter, Karen L. Hvizda, died in 2001. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A reading of the sacred Scripture in the Roman Catholic tradition will be offered in celebration of the life of Carleton Bechard, who died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, on Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. at MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME in Adams. A visitation period in which the family will greet friends will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the family plot in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Carleton also leaves a daughter-in-law, Theresa; three grandchildren, Steven Bechard, Shawn Tassone and Tamara Menard; and five great-grandchildren. A sister, Irene Brunnell, is deceased.
