James Steven Varellas

James Steven Varellas, 66, of 7 Grandview Terrace, a longtime businessman, died Wednesday at home. Born in Sparta, Greece, on Jan. 23, 1941, son of Stavros and Stavroula Masganas Varellas, he attended schools in Greece. He emigrated to the United States in 1966, settling in the Berkshires. He served with the Greek Army and was a firefighter in Greece for a short time. Mr. Varellas and his wife, Stacy, owned and operated the Pizza House from 1992 until his death. He also owned and operated the Pizza House in North Adams from 1966 to 2004. He was a member of St. George's Greek Orthodox Church in Pittsfield and enjoyed sports, especially the New York Yankees. He and his wife, the former Stacy J. Vagia, were married Sept. 18, 1977. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Steven J. Varellas of West Hartford, Conn., and Peter J. Varellas of North Adams; a daughter, Stella J. Varellas of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; a brother, John Varellas of Milford, Pa.; a sister, Mary Giannaris of Athens, Greece; and a grandson. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for James Steven Varellas, who died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, will be celebrated Saturday, March 31, at 2 p.m. at St. George's Greek Orthodox Church, Bradford Street, Pittsfield, by the Rev. Constantine Cambas. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours at PACIOREK FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. George's Church or to the American Diabetes Association, both in care of the funeral home. He also leaves a grandson, James S. Varellas of West Hartford, Conn.; his mother-in-law, Panagiota Vagia of Greece; his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Varellas; his son's companion, April Pitroff; his grandson, James S.
