Norman Singer

Norman Singer, 80, of Norfolk Road died Saturday morning at Fairview Commons Nursing Facility in Great Barrington. Born in Rockaway Beach, N.Y., on April 16, 1921, son of Julius and Rose Weiner Singer, he graduated from Rockaway High School. He also graduated from Cornell University and earned a master's degree from Columbia University. He moved to Sandisfield in 1972. Mr. Singer served in the Signal Corps during World War II and was involved in breaking codes. He was executive director of the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, retiring in 1981. Before that, he taught in the liberal arts program at Juilliard School of Music and was dean of the Aspen School of Music and director of the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado. He also served as executive director of the New York City Center of Music and Drama and was director of programs of the Hunter College Concert Bureau. He was president emeritus of the Country Dance Society of America and of the North American Rock Garden Society. He was a member of the boards of Dance Notation Bureau and the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund. In 1967, Mr. Singer was honored by the French government and was decorated as a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters. He took pride in his rock garden and traveled extensively seed collecting in mountains around the world. He leaves his companion of 56 years, Geoffrey Charlesworth. The funeral will be private.
