Donald S. "Hoppy" Hopkins Sr.

Donald S. "Hoppy" Hopkins Sr., 75, of 105 West Road, died Tuesday at home. Born in Great Barrington on Nov. 29, 1931, son of Seth and Marion Miles Hopkins, he moved to Lee and graduated from Lee High School in 1950. Mr. Hopkins served in the U.S. Marines from May 1952 to May 1955 in the Korean War, and was discharged as a sergeant. He opened Lee Power Equipment in 1980 and operated it at the time of his death. Previously, he was employed by Porrini Construction Co., and worked on the construction of the Mass. Turnpike. Later, he also drove trucks for Galenek Lumber, Petroleum Tank Lines in Great Barrington, B & P and Old Colony Trucking. While in high school, he worked with his father at his business, Hopkins Auto Wrecking. Mr. Hopkins was a member of Lee VFW Post 893, Teamsters Union 294 and the American Truck Historical Society. He enjoyed truck shows, watching his son, Victor, race at Lebanon Valley and motocross racing. He and his wife, the former Dolores Riganti, were married at St. Mary's Church in Nassau, N.Y., and would have celebrated their 50th anniversary on Sept. 14. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Donald S. Hopkins Jr. of Lee and Victor M. Hopkins of West Stockbridge; a daughter, Maria D. Hopkins of Lee; a sister, Mildred H. Holmes of Lee; and three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Donald S. Hopkins, who died Tuesday, April 24, 2007, will be conducted tomorrow morning at 11 at The Church of the Good Shepherd in South Lee by the Rev. Stanley M. Woolley, rector. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Nassau, N.Y. He leaves his beloved grandchildren, Donald S. Hopkins III and Daniel M. and Elizabeth Hopkins, all of Lee, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Shirley Hopkins and Nancy Snow. There will be no visiting hours. KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee is in charge of arrangements. He enjoyed his family, including his sons, who raced motocross, and nature.
