Gwen Berla

Gwen Berla, 85, of 21 Crossway Village, died Friday at the home of her daughter, Lin Schreiber of 48 Pomeroy Ave. in Pittsfield. Born in Munger, Mo., on Sept. 30, 1921, daughter of George W. and Ona Cole Alcorn, she attended schools in St. Louis. She moved to Los Angeles in 1945, to San Diego in 1969 and to Lee about a year ago. A veteran of World War II, she served in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. Mrs. Berla was employed by Naval Medical Center San Diego in Balboa Park, retiring in 1983. Before that, she and her husband, Morty G. Berla, owned and operated Berla Auto Parts in Studio City, Calif. She enjoyed reading, politics, dancing and doing crossword puzzles. Her husband, whom she married Sept. 21, 1947, died in 1969. Besides her daughter, she leaves three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Gwen Berla, who died Friday, May 4, 2007, also leaves a son-in-law, Richard Schreiber of Pittsfield, and three grandchildren, Jason Schreiber of Bethel, Conn., Jamie Schreiber of Southbury, Conn., and Serenity Schreiber of Danbury, Conn. A memorial celebration of Gwen's life will take place in St. Louis in September. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, 369 South St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
