Gertrude Margaret Cummings Collins

Gertrude Margaret Cummings Collins, 97, a former longtime resident of 31 Marion Ave., died Thursday at Glastonbury Healthcare Center in Glastonbury, Conn. Born in North Adams on May 15, 1910, daughter of Owen and Mary Horrigan Cummings, she attended schools in North Adams and graduated from the former St. Luke's School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1932. Mrs. Collins was a lifelong communicant of St. Francis' Church. She was a longtime member of the North Adams Country Club and chaired each office open to the Women's Division. She was also treasurer of the Division for 13 years. She served on the Board of Directors of the North Adams Visiting Nurses Association and also served as treasurer. She was the widow of John F. Collins who died on April 25, 1979. They were married at St. Francis' Church on Oct. 10, 1934. Mr. Collins was the owner of the J.F. Collins Tobacco Co. and was a city councilman. She leaves two daughters, Nancy Lord and Mary Mazzara, both of Glastonbury, Conn.; and a son, James Collins of Bennington, Vt.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Gertrude Collins will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Francis' Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours are at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., Tuesday morning from 9 to 10:30. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Connecticut at 11 Founders Plaza, East Hartford, CT 06108, or to House of Bread, 153 Main St., Hartford, CT 06120. The family would like to thank the staff at Glastonbury Health Care Center for their caring and kindness for the past few years. Survivors also include two sons-in-law, Robert Lord and William Mazzara, and a daughter-in-law, Grace Collins; eight grandchildren, John, Peter and Thomas Lord, Katherine Lord Lane, Timothy Collins, Mary Collins Habich, Megan Mazzara Burns and Kathleen Mazzara Mahon; and 13 great-grandchildren. Seven sisters, Alice, Theresa, Catherine and Claire Cummings, Mary Molloy, Helene Quinn and Margaret Kelly; and two brothers, James and John Cummings, are deceased.
