Anita J. Martin

Anita J. Martin, 85, of 27 Greene Ave., died Wednesday at Hillcrest Commons in Pittsfield. Born in North Adams on Nov. 8, 1921, daughter of John and Julia Burke Smith, she attended Drury High School. Mrs. Martin was employed as a certified nurse's aide at both North Adams Regional Hospital and Sweetbrook Health Care Center in Williamstown until her retirement. She was a communicant of St. Francis' Church in North Adams, where she was a eucharistic minister and lector. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles in ink, playing bingo and reading. She and her husband, Norman E. Martin, were married in 1948 in Washington, D.C. Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Charlene Wise of Williamstown; three sons, Laurence E. Martin, with whom she resided, and John H. Martin, both of North Adams, and Norman L. Martin of Adams; four grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Anita J. Martin, who died Aug. 15, 2007, will take place 10:15 a.m. Friday at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, to be followed at 11 a.m. by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Francis' Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery in North Adams. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to BFAIR in care of the funeral home. She leaves a son-in-law, Dr. Alfred Wise; two daughters-in-law, Odilia and Ann Martin; four grandchildren, James and Norman Haskins and Angela and Matthew Martin; and a sister-in-law, Helen Smith. She was predeceased by two sisters, Edla Fiela and Pauline Massara, and two brothers, Andrew "Peter" Smith and John Smith.
