Jean D. Melville

Jean D. Melville, 74, of 61 Summer St. died Thursday at home. Born in Boston on July 29, 1933, daughter of Robert and Agnes Murphy Dinsmore, she was educated there, graduating from the Girls' Latin School in 1949 and State Teachers College at Boston in 1953 with a bachelor's in education. In the early 1970s, she received a master's degree in education from the former North Adams State College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Mrs. Melville taught for 24 years for the Auburn, Cheshire and, most recently, Adams-Cheshire Regional School Districts, retiring in 1989. She was mainly a fourth-grade teacher. She was a member of the Massacusetts Teachers' Association, National Education Association and Adams-Cheshire Teachers' Association. She enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking, playing bridge and cribbage, and creating and solving crossword puzzles. Her husband, Eugene P. Melville Sr., whom she married Sept. 5, 1953, died in 1996. Mr. Melville was former superintendent of the Adams-Cheshire Regional School District. She leaves five daughters, Roberta M. Urquhart of Cheshire, Pamela A. Melville of Canaan, N.Y., Paula I. and Christina L. Melville, both of Adams, and Marcia P. Guy of New Bedford; a son, Eugene P. Melville Jr. of Pownall, Vt.; and seven grandchildren. A daughter, Lisa Melville, died in 1969. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private funeral with a Liturgy of Christian Burial for Jean D. Melville, who died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, was held at Notre Dame Church, followed by interment in the family plot in Cheshire Cemetery. Mrs. Melville traveled worldwide with her husband, and was an excellent gourmet chef who loved to cook for family and friends. She also leaves three sons-in-law, Michael Urquhart (Roberta), Peter Guy (Marcia) and William E. Huff (Christina). A brother, Robert Emmet Dinsmore, died in 1996. The family suggests memorial donations to the Eugene P. Melvile Sr. & Jean D. Melville Scholarship Fund in care of MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Liberty St., Adams.
