Donald Arthur Chaffee Sr.

Donald Arthur Chaffee Sr., 74, of Hollywood Boulevard, East Otis, died Wednesday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in East Otis on Oct. 4, 1932, son of Herbert L. and Viola Humason Chaffee, he attended schools there and graduated from Westfield Trade School with a certificate in cabinetry building. A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he served from 1948 to 1954. Mr. Chaffee was employed by Westfield Paper Co. in the transportation and shipping department until 1968, when he started his own carpentry business. In 1992, he took over Hall's General Store, which he operated until last year. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He and his wife, the former Evelyn Gray, were married in February 1953. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Donald A. Chaffee Jr., Clayton N. Chaffee and Leslie H. Chaffee, all of East Otis; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Ashley G. Chaffee, and by a daughter, Dawn M. Chaffee. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Donald A. Chaffee Sr., who died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, will be conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. at First Congregational Church in Lee by the Rev. Susan Phoenix, interim pastor, and the Rev. Dr. Roger Zimmerman. Burial will be private and prior to the service. Visiting hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee. Friends wishing may make donations to the First Congregational Church Mission Fund, in care of the funeral home, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238.
