Alexander Whitman Grieve

Alexander Whitman Grieve, 90, of 33 Highland Ave., died Monday at Williamstown Commons, where he had been a resident for several years. He was a well-known optometrist in the Berkshire area. Born in Adams on June 22, 1917, son of Alexander W. and Davina Livingston Grieve, he was a 1938 graduate of the former Adams High School. He was also a 1941 graduate of the New England School of Optometry. Mr. Grieve was an Army veteran, serving with the 111th Medical Service Command of the 15th Armored Division. He served from Aug. 26, 1942 until being honorably discharged in January 1946. He operated an optometry practice on First Center Street in Adams and later relocated to Park Street, retiring in 1938. His wife, the former Margaret E. Leary, whom he married June 6, 1924 in St. Thomas' Church, died on Dec. 24, 1995. He leaves a granddaughter, Sarah G. Rogalin of Hipoint, N.C., and his grandson, Eric, of Hipoint. A daughter, Kate Grieve, died in 2004. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A burial service for Alexander Whitman "Whitt" Grieve, who died Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the family plot in Bellevue Cemetery in Adams. The family extends an invitation to those who wish to attend. MCBRIDE FUNERAL SERVICE in Adams is in charge of arrangements. He leaves When he retired from the optometry business in 1938, he left a host of grateful patients who resumed the joys of reading novels and other visual activities.
