John E. Mallory Sr.

John E. Mallory Sr., 84, of 15 Commonwealth Ave. died yesterday at Fairview Hospital. Born in Great Barrington on Feb. 18, 1923, son of George E. and Margaret Fitzgerald Mallory, he was a 1940 graduate of the former Searles High School. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served with abroad the USS Baltimore and received numerous campaign medals. A master plumber, Mr. Mallory was employed with his father in the family business, taking over when his father died. He retired in 1986. He was a communicant of St. Peter's Church and a former member and past president of its Holy Name Society, and a charter member of James A. Modolo Post 8348. He owned horses and raced them at Green Mountain and the Fair Circuit from 1958 to 1978. He enjoyed building bird houses. He and his wife, the former Josephine Makarski, were married Sept. 25, 1945, at All Saints' Church in Housatonic. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, John E. Mallory Jr. of Great Barrington and Joseph J. Mallory of New Marlborough; a daughter, Anita J. Delgrande of Concord, N.C.; a sister, Anita Lowe of Great Barrington; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for John E. Mallory Sr., who died Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church by the Rev. William Murphy, pastor. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James Mallory, Thomas Mallory, Robin Mallory, Eric Stevernagle, Michele Bray and Joseph S. Makarski Jr. The family will receive friends Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy in John's name be made to the St. Peter's Restoration Fund, in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He leaves his daughters-in-law, Joanne and Robin Mallory; a son-in-law, Allen DelGrande; four grandchildren, AnnMarie, Suzanne, Julie and Claudine; seven great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Hannah, Malorie, Mary Jane, Allison, Emily and Georgette. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
