Sophie Brooks

Sophie Brooks, 87, of 522 Walker St., died Monday at North Adams Commons. Born in Ware on Oct. 5, 1920, daughter of Henry and Victoria Kuropatwa Szufnarowski, she moved to Adams with her family at an early age and attended Hoosac Street School and graduated from the former Plunkett and Adams High schools. Mrs. Brooks was employed by the former North Adams State College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, retiring in 1985. She also worked for the former Model Laundry in North Adams, at the former Sprague Electric Co., at General Cleaners, at Treet Cleaners and at Hunter Outdoor Products. She was a communicant of St. Francis' Church and enjoyed sewing and knitting. Her husband, Oliver H. Brooks, whom she married Oct. 5, 1940, at St. Stanislaus' Church in Adams, died May 19, 1967. Mrs. Brooks leaves a daughter, Judith Roberts of Clarksburg; two sons, Richard O. Brooks of Carlsbad, Calif., and Paul H. Brooks of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sisters, Alice Lepak of Manchester, Conn., and Helen O'Neil and Adele Szufnarowski, both of Adams; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Sophie Brooks, who died Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, will be Friday at 10:15 a.m. from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapel, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, with a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Donations may be made to St. Francis' Church or to Shriners' Children's Hospital, both in care of the funeral home. She also leaves a son-in-law, James; daughters-in-law, Diane (Richard) and Margaret (Paul); grandchildren, Kimberly (Thomas) Roberts-Morandi of Stamford, Vt., Rebecca Goyette (Andrew) of Adams, Jeffrey Brooks and Denise Brooks, both of California, and Nichole Brooks and Benjamin Brooks, both of Colorado Springs; three great-grandchildren, Ashton and Megan Goyette, and Thomas Morandi; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Martin of Bennington, Vt., and Yvonne Simon of Woodford, Vt.; nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by three brothers, Anthony, Frederick and Thaddeus Szufnarowski, and by two sisters, Celia Szufnarowski and Gladys Sirard. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family.
