Ronald C. Deffer, 71

GREAT BARRINGTON - Ronald Chester Deffer, 71, of Fairview Terrace died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at Fairview Commons. Born in Jamaica, N.Y., on Jan. 2, 1936, son of Chester R. and Lillian Heimer Deffer, he graduated from Schoharie (N.Y.) Center High School. He moved to Great Barrington in 1964. A Marine Corps veteran, he enlisted on June 29, 1955, and was honorably discharged as a corporal on June 28, 1963. Mr. Deffer was a manager and bartender at the Egremont Country Club and also was a bartender at the Wyantenuck Country Club, until retiring in 2002. He attended Hope Church in Lenox and enjoyed playing golf, bowling, crossword puzzles and playing cards and other games. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and abroad. He and his wife, the former Grace Rutherford, would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 28. They were married in Canajoharie, N.Y. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Scott Deffer and his wife, Paula, of Beverly and Barry Deffer of Sheffield; a daughter, Ronna Zigmond and her husband, Karl, of Shanghai, China, and Housatonic; a brother, Bruce Deffer and his wife, Margaret, of Burtonsville, N.Y.; a sister, Namoni Tague of Schoharie, and five grandchildren, Andrew, Eric and Alison Deffer and Kyle and Ava Zigmond. FUNERAL NOTICE - The funeral for Mr. Ronald C. Deffer will be Friday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. at Finnerty and Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Great Barrington. The family will received friends on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
