E. Harper Holbrook, 89

GREAT BARRINGTON - E. Harper Holbrook, 89, a native of Great Barrington, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at York (Maine) Hospital. Born June 5, 1918, son of Edwin and Mildred Holbrook, he was raised by his grandparents, John T. and Mildred Maude Harper. After graduating from the former Searles High School, he attended Williston Academy in Easthampton and Bryant Stratton College in Boston. He moved to Cape Porpoise, Maine, in 1983, to Kennebunk, Maine, in 1994, and to Sentry Hill at York Harbor retirement community in York in 2001. A Coast Guard veteran of World War II, he served from 1942 to 1945 and was honorably discharged as a boatswain's mate, first class. Mr. Harper worked for the state of Massachusetts as a municipal examiner, retiring in 1983. While residing in Great Barrington, he was active in local government and community affairs. He was a longtime member and chairman of the Great Barrington Finance Committee and of the board of trustees at Fairview Hospital. While in Cape Porpoise, he served on the Kennebunkport Budget Committee. He was a Mason in the Cincinnatus Lodge. His wife, the former Elizabeth "Betty" Searle, whom he married on Sept. 19, 1942, died in 2002. He leaves a daughter, Judith Bubriski of Hamilton, a son, John Holbrook of York, and a granddaughter, Jennifer Bubriski of Cambridge. FUNERAL NOTICE - A private burial service will be held in Great Barrington.
