John H. Dempsey

John H. Dempsey, 94, of Fairview Terrace, died Monday at Fairview Hospital. Born in North Canaan, Conn., on Nov. 25, 1913, son of Freeman and Annie Wanger Dempsey, he attended Gilbert Academy in Winsted, Conn., and graduated from Blair Academy in Blairtown, N.J., in 1933 and from Yale University in 1938. A resident of Warwick, R.I., for 25 years, he returned to Great Barrington in 1976. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Signal Corps from 1942 to 1946as a sergeant stationed in the European Theater. Mr. Dempsey held a Massachusetts master gasfitter's license. He was employed by Suburban Gas Propane Corp. in New Jersey as a franchise dealer and supervisor of eastern New England. He retired in 1976. He was a member of Garvin O'Connell American Legion Post 49 in Canaan and of Adams Budz Post 8183 in Housatonic. His wife, the former Ruth Margaret Patterson, whom he married March 25, 1941, died Dec. 30, 2004. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for John H. Dempsey, who died Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME by a priest from St. James' Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. A calling hour will precede the funeral service from noon to 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy in John's memory be made to the Fairview Hospital Pulmonary Unit, in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA, 01230. Mr. Dempsey leaves a goddaughter, Marcia R. Cook of Southfield and many friends.
