Theodore Szafranski

Theodore Szafranski, 86, of 2 West Kittler Ave., died Tuesday at North Adams Commons Care Center. Born in Adams on May 11, 1921, son of Martin and Agnes Jamros Szafranski, he graduated from St. Stanislaus' Elementary School in 1936 and from the former Adams High School in 1940. A World War II veteran, he served in the Navy aboard the USS William Wilkins, the USS John M. Schofield and the USS Martin Behrman in the European, North Atlantic and Indian Ocean campaigns. Mr. Szafranski was manager of the former Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (better known as A & P supermarket) in North Adams for 40 years, retiring in 1980. He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus' Church and a member of its St. Stanislaus Kostka Society, and a member of Adams Post 160 American Legion, VFW Post 996 in North Adams and the PNA. He was a former member of the Adams Lions Club and enjoyed bowling and sports. His wife, the former Florence Kondej, whom he married Nov. 22, 1947, died April 15, 1975. He leaves a son, Michael Szafranski of Gilbert, Ariz.; a daughter, Marlene Salvi of Cheshire; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Theodore Szafranski, who died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, will be Saturday, Dec. 1, at 9 a.m. from Trottier Pringle Funeral Home, 6 Summer St., with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus' Church celebrated by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor of the Catholic Community of Adams. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus' Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Szafranski also leaves a daughter-in-law, Bonnie; a son-in-law, Richard; five grandchildren, Eric and Marc Salvi, and Martin, Matthew and Mark Szafranski; four great-grandchildren, Brittany and Jacob Salvi, and Abigail and Madelyn Szafranski; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, John Szafranski.
