Robert M. Degere, 83

ADAMS - Robert M. Degere, 83, of 28 Grove St. died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at home after a long battle with cancer. Born in Adams on March 4, 1924, son of Fred and Yvonne Johnson Degere, he attended the former Commercial Street and C.T. Plunkett schools and graduated from the formre Adams High School in 1941. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific theater with the 118th Infantry Division, attaining the rank of technical sergeant. He received several campaign medals. Mr. Degere was employed by the former New England Lime Co., now SMI, in the compilation section as a bagger/depositor for many years, retiring in 1985. Before that, he was an expediter at the former Arnold Lumber Co. He was a communicant of Notre Dame Church and a member of American Legion Post 160, of Adams Lodge of Elks 1335 and of the Maple Grove Civic Club, where he served as sergeant at arms. His wife, the former Diana M. Noel, whom he married April 7, 1951, in Notre Dame Church, died Nov. 14, 1986. He leaves two daughters, Karen L. Hnatonko and her husband, Stanley, of Adams and Kathleen Manship of Pittsfield; a son, David R. Degere of Ryaz, Switzerland; a brother, Richard Degere of Brighton; two sisters, Helen Milne of Lexington and Shirley Remillard of North Adams; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Francis and R. James Degere. FUNERAL NOTICE - A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Robert M. Degere will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame des Sept Douleurs Church. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at McBride Funeral Home, 8 Liberty St., Adams. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire, Curran Memorial Highway, North Adams.
