Michael J. LaVersa Sr.

North Adams - Michael J. LaVersa Sr., 86, of 85 Eagle St. died Friday at Sweet Brook Care Centers in Williamstown. Born in Geneva, N.Y., on Jan. 1, 1922, son of Francesco and Rachaele Iaccopino LaVersa, he moved to North Adams as a child and graduated from Drury High School. Mr. LaVersa was an Army veteran of World War II. He was employed by General Electric Co. in the power transformer department for 37 years, retiring in 1986. Following his retirement, he worked as a real estate agent with Century 21-Harold Dupee Realtors in North Adams. He also was a licensed appraiser. A photographer, he took photos of many local weddings and functions. He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church and a member of the North Adams Elks and the North Adams Sons of Italy. Mr. LaVersa was a member of the Democratic City Committee and of the North Adams Fair Housing Commission and served on the board of the North Adams Ambulance Service. He enjoyed fishing and macramé. In his younger years, he had a radio show on a local station. He and his wife, the former Mary S. Bruno, were married April 18, 1942, at St. Anthony's Church. Besides his wife, he leaves six sons, Michael J. LaVersa Jr. of Alexandria, Va., Dennis C. LaVersa of Hanson, Francis X. LaVersa of North Adams, Charles A. LaVersa of Hampden, Maine, Mark P. LaVersa of North Adams and James P. LaVersa of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Rachel Vicari of Adams; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Michael J. LaVersa, who died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapel, 521 West Main St., North Adams, with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony's Capital Campaign or to Elder Services of Berkshire County, both in care of the funeral home. He also leaves nine nieces and nephews. He was predecesaed by a sister, Sarah Zanett, and by four brothers, Joseph, Espirito, Rocco and Theodoro LaVersa.
