Edward J. Armata, 86

ADAMS - Edward John Armata, 86, of 2 Summit Ave., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at the Soldier's Home in Holyoke, where he had resided since November. Born in Adams on Jan. 15, 1922, son of Ziginond and Julia Scieszka Armata, he attended local schools, including St. Stanislaus Kostka School. A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he enlisted on Oct. 22, 1940, serving as a sergeant with a Marine line company as a BAR man (carrying a Browning Automatic Rifle) in combat in the South Pacific. He served in Guadalcanal and in the China theaters. He was honorably discharged from San Diego. Mr. Armata was employed by the former Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates and also operated Summit Electronics Shop in Adams. He retired in 1987 from the General Electric power transformer division as a technician in the test division. He was a member of St. Stanislaus' Church as well as Adams Post 160 American Legion. His wife, the former Jane Frances Biros, whom he married Nov. 27, 1947, died Aug. 29, 1989. He leaves three sons and daughters-in-law, Peter Z. and Barbara Armata of Adams, Michael E. and Paula Armata of Cheshire and Paul J. and Judy Armata of North Adams; two daughters, Maryann Armata of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Susan M. Armata of Stockbridge; a sister, Sophie Armata of Adams; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE - A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Edward J. Armata will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus' Church by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor. Calling hours will be held at McBride Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery in Adams. Donations in Mr. Armata's memory may be made to the Holyoke Soldier's Home in care of the funeral home.
