James A. Cunningham Sr., 92

GREAT BARRINGTON - James Arthur "Art" Cunningham Sr., 92, a longtime resident of State Road, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at Fairview Commons. Born in Great Barrington on April 3, 1915, son of Richard J. and Teresa Nolan Cunningham, he was a 1932 graduate of the former Searles High School. He also attended the former Berkshire Business College in Pittsfield. A Navy veteran of World War II, he enlisted in 1942. Mr. Cunningham retired in 1982 as assistant business manager of Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn. He had been employed in the business office of the former Southern Berkshire Power and Electric Co. and in the accounting department of the former National Mahaiwe Bank before entering the service. He later worked for the Great Barrington and Pittsfield milk exchanges and at the former Fairdale Farms as the Great Barrington representative. He was a communicant of St. Peter's Church and served on the Parish Council. He was a 68-year member of the Knights of Columbus Mount Everett Council 513 and a member of the Wyantenuck Cuntry Club for more than 40 years. An avid golfer, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and his wife, the former Virginia A. Adams, were married Oct. 9, 1948, in Corpus Christi Church in Housatonic. Besides his wife, he leaves a son and daughter-in-law, James A. Cunningham Jr. and Elizabeth D. Cunningham of Great Barrington; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary C. Bourgeois and Raymond E. Bourgeois Jr. of Billerica; a granddaughter, Meaghan Cunningham Rice and her husband, Scott, of Hinesburg, Vt.; two grandsons, Brian Cunningham and his wife, Bonnie, of Housatonic and Michael Cunningham of Pittsfield, and two great-grandchildren, Jackson Cunningham and Marti Cunningham, both of Housatonic. Two brothers, John Cunningham and Richard Cunningham, and two sisters, Constance Garrity and Marion Cobden, are deceased. FUNERAL NOTICE - Services for Mr. Cunningham will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. from St. Peter's Church by the Rev. William Murphy, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Birches-Roy Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to Hospice Care in the Berkshires or to St. Peter's Renovation Fund, both in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
