William J. Charon Jr., 84

ADAMS - William J. Charon Jr., 84, of 31 Grove St., died Tuesday Feb. 12, 2008, at North Adams Regional Hospital after being taken there by Adams Ambulance Service after suffering a cardiac seizure at home. Born in North Adams on Jan. 20, 1924, son of William J. Charon Sr. and Catherine Jennings Charon, he first attended North Adams schools for a short time until his family moved to Adams. He graduated in 1942 from the former Adams High School. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific theater as a radioman on the LCI 336. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 4, 1946. Mr. Charon was employed by GE in Pittsfield in its power transformer division and later in Naval Ordnance as a property administrator. He retired in 1982. He had first worked at North Adams' first radio station, WKOB, as a station engineer and also in its sales department. He was a member of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church in Cheshire. He was a member and exalted ruler of Elks Lodge BPOE 1335 of Adams and a former Elks district deputy. A member of Post 160 American Legion, he enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers, Atlanta Braves and the North Adams SteepleCats. His wife, the former Doris L. Richer, to whom he was married on June 13, 1946, in Notre Dame Church by Monsignor Joseph T. Smith, died Oct. 22, 2003. He leaves his son, David L. Charon of Adams; a sister, Ann McLaren of Adams and Fort Myers, Fla., and several nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE - A prayer service in the Roman Catholic tradition will be offered Friday evening at 7 from MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME, Adams. A visitation period for family and friends will be held from 4 to 7 prior to the service. Cremation will follow and an inurnment service will be announced later in the spring. The family suggests memorial donations to the Adams Ambulance Fund, through the service on Columbia Street or through the funeral home on Liberty Street.
