Catherine Comerford, 92

GREAT BARRINGTON - Catherine "Kay" Comerford, 92, a longtime resident of Lewis Avenue, died Monday morning, Feb. 18, 2008, at Timberlyn Heights Nursing Center. She was the register of deeds for Southern Berkshire from 1974 until retiring in 1989. Born in Scarsdale, N.Y., on June 23, 1915, the daughter of William and Beatrice Bayer Byrne, she graduated from schools in Scarsdale. She moved to West Springfield in the early 1940s and to Great Barrington in several years later. Mrs. Comerford had first worked as a merchandiser for Best & Co. while residing in New York, and later at the Eastern States Farmers Exchange in West Springfield. She was a communicant of St. Peter's Church for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Thursday Morning Club and volunteered as a teacher's aide in both the Berkshire Hills and Southern Berkshire regional school districts. She sewed beautiful clothes for her daughter. Her greatest love was being with her family and friends and enjoying everyone's company. Her husband, James. J. Comerford, whom she married June 26, 1943, in Scarsdale, died Sept. 21, 1973. He was Southern Berkshire register of deeds from 1958 until his death, when Mrs. Comerford was elected to succeed him. She leaves her daughter, Anne Marie Comerford of Great Barrington, and a brother, William Byrne and his wife, Dorothy, of New London, N.H. A son, James J. Comerford Jr., died in 1954. She also was predeceased by three brothers, Harold J. Byrne in 1984 and Edward J.byrne and Charles Byrne, both in 2000. FUNERAL NOTICE - Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Catherine Comerford will be held Saturday, March 1, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church in Great Barrington by the Rev. William Murphy. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, Feb. 29, from 4 to 7 at Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington. Donations in her memory may be made to Fairview Hospital, Timberlyn Heights Activities Fund or HospiceCare in the Berkshires through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Remembrances, memories and reflections may be sent to the family through the funeral home.
