Emily M. Schait, 92

GREAT BARRINGTON - Emily Marie Schait, 92, of 42 Division St. died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at home. Born in Passaic, N.J., on May 9, 1915, daughter of John and Lucy Stojaczk Horka, she graduate from Passaic High School in 1932 and from Patterson State Teachers College in 1935. She later moved to Upper Montclair, N.J., and, in 1985, to Great Barrington. Mrs. Schait taught fifth grade for three years in the Passaic public schools before her marriage; after raising her family, she taught fifth and sixth grades at St. Cassian's School in Mountclair, N.J., for three years. She was a communicant of All Saints' Church in Housatonic and was a member and president of the local AARP chapter. She had been a member of the Upper Montclair Women's Club, a Boy Scout parent and Girl Scout leader, later training other leaders for the Girl Scout Council in New Jersey. She was an avid crossworld puzzle-solver and enjoyed reading, cooking and needlework. She was devoted to her grandchildren. She leaves a daughter, Martha Tawczynski of Great Barrington, with whom she resided; a son, Frank Shane of Upper Montclair, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her former husband, Harold Schait, in 1992; another son, Paul, in 1974, and her sister, Eleanor Avery, in 1996. FUNERAL NOTICE - A memorial service for Emily M. Schait will be conducted at All Saints' Church by the Rev. William Murphy, pastor, in the spring at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. It was Mrs. Schait's wish that in lieu of flowers, expression of remembrance be made to the Southern Berkshire Elderly Transportation Association in care of Birches-Roy Funeral Home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA, which is in charge of arrangements.
