PITTSFIELD - Jonathan Louis Tauer, 39, of 70 Conz St., Northampton, formerly of 39 Cascade St., died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at home of complications from post-traumatic stress disorder. Born in Chicopee on Oct. 21, 1968, son of Robert L. Tauer and Mary C. Anderson Tauer, he was a 1987 graduate of Taconic High School. A decorated Army combat veteran, he served from 1990 to 1994, including a tour of duty in Somalia during the crisis of October 1993. He received the Army Commendation Medal and two Army Achievement Medals and was honorably discharged. After his service, Mr. Tauer obtained his certification in heating, ventilating and air conditioning, or HVAC. Soon after that, his PTSD symptoms began to manifest. He worked part time in the Veterans Affairs horticulture division in Northampton. He enjoyed fishing, art, music, movies, and playing chess with his fellow veterans. He volunteered his time, taking veterans to church and regularly performed the readings during Mass, as well as transporting them to medical appointments. He loved bird watching and really took the time to notice nature's beauty. He loved all animals. Besides his mother and his father, both of Pittsfield, he leaves a brother, David W. Tauer of Dracut; and two nieces, Erika T. Tauer and Mackenzi E.R. Tauer, both of Dracut. FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Jonathan Louis Tauer, who died Tuesday, April 8, will be Saturday, April 12, at 9:15 a.m. from Dery Funeral Home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Mark's Church by the Rev. John C. Salatino, pastor. Burial will be held at a later date in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday, April 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Friends of Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.

I remember John as a quiet but funny kid back in St. Joe. I don't remember when he left for Taconic, but another classmate and I shared two funny memories of John and I while we lost touch, I'll never forget that day in Mrs. Barbara's religion class. Rest in peace John.
