Howard R. Shippee, 85

ADAMS, Mass. — Howard Raymond Shippee, 85, of 188 East Road died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in Whitingham, Vt., on Oct. 14, 1923, son of Arnold and Harriet Kingsley Shippee, he attended schools there and graduated from Whitingham High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Army from January 1943 to December 1945 as part of the 101st Airborne Division, 53rd Troop Carrier Wing, 436 Troop Carrier Group. Mr. Shippee was employed by Massachusetts Electric Co. in a number of positions from July 1948 until his retirement in November 1985. Both before and after his military service, he was employed by JC Penney Co. He was a 60-year member of American Legion Post 125. In his younger days, he played clarinet and saxophone and formed a local band. He and his wife, the former Elaine I. Reynolds, were married Aug. 30, 1947. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, James H. Shippee of Adams; a nephew, Wayne Holbrook of Brattleboro, Vt., and his beloved dog Gypsy. He was predeceased by his sister, Crystal Holbrook, who had resided in Jacksonville, Vt. FUNERAL NOTICE — In accordance with Mr. Shippee's wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Northern Berkshire Healthcare Annual Fund or the Berkshire Humane Society in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247.
