Richard A. Fitzgerald, 52

WESTFIELD, Mass. — Richard A. Fitzgerald, 52, of Westfield died on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, in Pittsfield from cardiac arrest. Born in Far Rockaway, N.Y., on April 23, 1956, son of Joseph and Elizabeth DeGroot Fitzgerald, he attend New York schools and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1978 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. He moved to Westfield in 1985. Mr. Fitzgerald was employed as manager of finance at Berkshire Healthcare in Pittsfield since 1995. He had earlier been an accountant with the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge. He was actively involved with his children's activities, from coaching Little League and T-ball to participating in myriad events at Highland Elementary and South Middle schools. He was also a longtime member of the Westfield YMCA, where he enjoyed playing volleyball. He and his son, Alexander Fitzgerald, were members of the Westfield Sportsman's Club, and he enjoyed fishing, boating and water skiing. Besides his wife, Debbie Oppermann, and his 18-year-old son, at home, he leaves a daughter, Sarah Fitzgerald, 15, at home; his sister, Debbie Williams and her husband, Edward, of Bay Shore, N.Y.; two nieces Kerry Williams Seyda her husband, McKinley, and Christine Williams, all of Bay Shore, a great-niece and -nephew and many friends and family. Another niece, Jennifer Williams of Bay Shore, is deceased. FUNERAL NOTICE — Calling hours will be held on Friday, Dec. 12, from 4 to 7 at Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 1 from the funeral home by the Rev. Charles VanAusdall. Burial will take place on Monday, Dec. 15, at Pine Hill Cemetery in Westfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Notre Dame or to the Christian Children's Fund through funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
