John G. Shakar, 92
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — John George Shakar, 92, of 177 Prospect St., died Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at North Adams Commons.
He was born in North Adams on Dec. 27, 1918, son of Abraham and Julia David Shakar. He graduated from Drury High School.
Mr. Shakar was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army. He worked for the former Sprague Electric Co. for many years until his retirement.
He was a communicant of the former St. Francis of Assisi Church and a member of the Lebanese Social Club. He also was a member of the Dr. George L. Curran Post 996 VFW; the Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion; and the Greylock Community Club. He was an active fundraiser for veterans' causes and served in the honor guard at military funerals.
Survivors include his wife, the former Roseann E. Vigna, whom he married on Sept. 26, 1953; daughters Mary Ann Racette of North Adams and Jacqueline Shakar of Sutton; brother David Shaker of Boca Raton, Fla.; grandchildren Matthew Racette, Michael Racette and Joshua Racette; and nieces and nephews.
Sisters Rita Shaker and Mae O’Brien and brothers Marshall Shakar and James, Alfred and Edward Shaker.
FUNERAL NOTICE The funeral for John Shakar will be Tuesday, July 19, at 10:15 a.m. at Fllynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11. Burial will follow in Southview cemetery. Calling hours will take place at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in care of the funeral home.
