Gladys P. Buchanan, 93
ADAMS, Mass. — Gladys P. Buchanan, 93, of 51 East Road died peacefully at home on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, after a brief illness.
Born in New Bedford on March 23, 1919, daughter of Isaac and Louie Bordley Pinchbeck, she was educated in New Bedford schools. As a young girl, she participated in the National Spelling Bee held in Washington, D.C., where she met President Herbert Hoover. After graduation from high school, she moved with her family to North Adams.
Mrs. Buchanan was an accomplished seamstress with her own home-decorating business making slipcovers, curtains, draperies and other accoutrements for her many loyal customers in Northern Berkshire and Southern Vermont. She retired in 2000, but continued to provide her family with products of her handiwork.
She was a member of First Congregational Church of North Adams and was active in its women's groups. She also was an avid genealogist who spent many hours researching and recording all branches of the family tree to leave as a legacy to her family.
Her late husband, John Buchanan, whom she met after moving to North Adams, were married 55 years. They were longtime residents of Williamstown, living on North Street.
She leaves her daughter, Jane Jones and her companion, Dave Woodin, with whom she made her home; her beloved sister, Amy Fowler and her husband, Clifford, of Stoughton; her brother, Milton Pinchbeck of New Bedford; her grandchildren, Lisa Lister and her husband, Douglas of Gardnerville, Nev., and Jonathon Jones of Wrentham; her great grandson, John "Gus" Lister of Gardnerville and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mrs. Buchanan will be held Monday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. from First Congregational Church in North Adams. Burial will follow in the family plot at Houghton Cemetery in Stamford, Vt.
