Mohawk Runs Past McCann Tech

NORTH ADAMS, Mass -- Mohawk outlasted the McCann Tech football team, 38-21, Saturday afternoon in a battle of big plays.

 

McCann received scoring plays from sophomore quarterback Justin Meczywor, who threw for a touchdown, and three touchdowns from Dakota Bolte, who contributed two rushing and one receiving TD.

 

Mohawk used its potent rushing attack and an opportunistic defense that made four interceptions to hand the Hornets (1-4) their fourth straight loss.

 

The teams traded 1st quarter touchdowns on each of their first offensive drives within the first four minutes. Both teams also traded interceptions on their next offensive possessions, but only Mohawk’s offense could take advantage of its turnover, grabbing a 14-7 lead. Mohawk forced McCann to punt on its next possession and cashed in with a 40-yard rushing play.

 

Mohawk’s second interception came on McCann’s next offensive possession, leading to another score on a 10 yard rush. McCann got the offense going late in the second quarter, when Meczywor threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Dakota Bolte. On the following kickoff, Mohawk was able to return the kick for a 85-yard touchdown and went to half-time ahead, 32-14.

 

The second half showcased strong defense from both sides as each team only allowed one touchdown. McCann forced Mohawk to punt on its opening drive. On McCann’s resulting drive, the Hornets were able score a touchdown on a breakaway 80-yard rush from Bolte. Mohawk’s defense buttoned down after the big play from McCann, intercepting the ball two more times. The second turnover resulted in a 20-yard rushing touchdown.

 

“We executed our game plan for the most part,” said coach Bob Leclair “Obviously the turnovers weren’t part of the game plan but they’re going to happen, especially with a young quarterback who’s still learning.”

 

Leclair said the Hornets have some work to do to get ready for Intercounty West opponent and city rival Drury next Saturday.

 

“We need to play turnover and penalty free, that will definitely be the focus in practice this week,” LeClair said.

 

McCann hosts Drury at home next week while Mohawk hosts Mount Greylock.
