PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Hoosac Valley boys' soccer team got off to a good start in the 2011 season, but a hat trick by Pittsfield's Chris McGovern allowed his team a better finish in a 3-1 home win for the Generals on Friday afternoon.

The Hurricanes (0-1) opened the scoring in the sixth minute when sophomore midfielder Sean Ryan-Kut took a beautiful through ball from teammate Chris Stefanik and finished with his left foot into the side panel of the net. McGovern tied the score in the 23rd minute, however, and gave Pittsfield (1-1) the lead by tallying another goal just two minutes before halftime.

The Generals' midfielder added a little insurance for his team by finishing off a pass from Dan Brien just over two minutes into the second half. Senior Dylan Hilchey had a solid day for the Hoosac defense, while junior goalie Tom Galisa made nine saves in defeat.

The Hurricanes are back in action on Tuesday, when they host Lenox at 6 p.m. at Renfrew Field.
