Renaissance Scores Late to Tie Hornets

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- There really hasn't been much for the McCann Tech girls' soccer team to feel bad about this season. Senior forward Mary Nguyen broke the program's all-time scoring mark recently, the defense has six shutouts this year and the Hornets have started off the season with a perfect 9-0 record in Tri-County League play.

It wasn't the end of the world, but Olivia Feliciano's goal in the 75th minute that gave Renaissance a 1-1 tie with McCann on Friday marked the rare occasion where Mike Dowling's club didn't walk off the field as winners this year. Feliciano scored off of a pass from Kaniyah Nash with five minutes left in the game, giving the CyberCats a much-needed point in league play and ruining the Hornets' perfect record in Tri-County matches. Despite the draw, McCann (12-1-1, 9-0-1) still leads the division based on its 2-1 home win over Renaissance last month.

Nguyen scored early on for the Hornets, cashing in on a pass from junior Eileen Zajac just four minutes into the game. The contest proved to be a tough one for McCann, however, as the hosts earned a 12-7 edge in shots and 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalie Alex Wood kept the CyberCats off the board for most of the game, however, making 11 saves in the match until Feliciano netted the equalizer with five minutes to spare.

After playing seven games in a span of 12 days, McCann receives a much needed rest before resuming play with a home game against Putnam at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
